How to keep your kids entertained during the school holidays

The school holidays are a treasured time for most families, as you get to spend quality time together away from the daily grind. As much as the holidays can be fun-filled, they can also be slightly anxiety-inducing. If you’re dreading the thought of filling all those hours with action packed activities, you’re not alone.

To give you a helping hand, we’ve put together some fun ways to keep your kids entertained during the holidays. From active adventures to unique creations, they’re sure to keep them (and you!) happy.

Get active

Physical activity is one of the best ways to keep your kids entertained through the holidays. Not only will they have lots of fun, the exercise will use up a lot of their energy, so they’ll sleep soundly at night too. There are tonnes of ways you can be active, both indoors and outdoors. If the sun is shining, why not head out on a fun family bike ride? Pick a fairly flat route that the kids will be able to cycle along easily. You’re guaranteed to have lots of fun and it’s essentially free!

If the weather is not on your side, then you could take them swimming to your local pool, or head to an indoor trampoline park. If you’re looking for more wallet-friendly options, then ask your kids to put on a dance show at home. Give them some time beforehand to come up with a routine and pick the music, then ask them to show the rest of the family later. It will keep them busy for hours!

Unleash creativity

Give your kids something to devote their attention to with an exciting craft activity. If you can, create a ‘making box’ in advance of the holidays, packed with paints, crayons, sketch pads, glitter and any other crafty items you can find. By having this ready to go, you can whip it straight out when the kids are bored. Let them be creative or give them some ideas of what to make, such as a painting of the family or a sketch of their school.

If you’re stuck for ideas, why not make origami from paper? Boil some eggs and ask them to paint cute characters on the outside? Or create some jewellery using beads, paper and some string? You really can make pretty much anything you put your mind to.

Get cooking

Cooking up some tasty treats is a fun activity for both you and your kids. It’s a great way for them to learn how to follow instructions and improve their reading skills, as well as show them that you can make something great if you put the effort in. Let them take the reins here and avoid making it yourself.

If you’re baking, ask them to fetch the ingredients, measure them out and help you mix them in the bowl. Once your chosen cakes or bakes are ready, you can have some fun decorating them. Don’t have much time to bake? Then ask them to help you make dinner or lunch instead. Either way, creating dishes in the kitchen is an easy way to keep your kids occupied.

There are tonnes of fun and easy ways to keep your kids entertained during the school holidays. If you need to stick to a budget, then plan the holidays using a 3:1 ratio. For every expensive day out you have, such as to the zoo, plan three free or low-cost activities. This will help you to keep costs down while still having lots of fun and excitement.
