How to choose the right jewellery for every occasion

Jewellery can add the finishing touch to any outfit and make an occasion feel that extra bit special. It’s a thriving industry in the UK, but with so much choice out there, knowing which pieces to wear when can be tricky. Do you keep it minimal, or go all out every time?

The practical answer is that every wardrobe needs a mixture of formal and more casual jewellery. They say variety is the spice of life, and collecting different styles of necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings can give you the flair and flexibility you deserve from one occasion to the next.

As a jewellery addict myself, here are my tips on how to wear your precious accessories!

Special occasions

I can’t be the only one that’s imagined their dream engagement ring since they were a teenager…

It doesn’t get much more special than your wedding day of course, but for other more formal occasions where you need to look your best, use classic pieces to add the fine details to your outfit.

Long pendant necklaces can add elegance to almost any look, while chandelier or ear climber earrings bring a little sparkle if you’re sporting an up-do.

Party time

When it’s time to let loose and paint the town red, you’ll want to pick out statement pieces to jazz up minimal or monotone looks. Whether it’s cocktails with the girls or a night on the dancefloor, don’t be afraid to show off your personality through your jewellery.

Try to limit yourself to one or two items though – it’s easy to overdo it, especially with more chunky designs.

In the workplace

In a professional setting you need to look as polished as possible, so it’s a good idea to go for more subtle pieces that won’t distract those around you. Avoid jangly items and keep things extra minimal if you’re prone to fidgeting.

A small pendant can complement a fitted blazer, while a sleek bracelet will sit nicely with a blouse or shirt.

While not every piece of jewellery can be worn around the house or out and about, I’m a firm believer that keeping it casual doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style.

Throw on a couple of bangles with a sundress, or smarten up a t-shirt and jeans combo with studded earrings. If you’re heading into town for brunch or a spot of shopping, stack multiple items together to create a layered look.
