Channeling Our Inner Aquaman

In need of something to banish those January blues? Then you need to channel your inner Aquaman in a bid to feel more refreshed as we start a new year.

Fresh air

It feels like a cliche now saying that some fresh air will do you some good, but you know what? It’s true. Go outdoors in natural daylight as much as possible, especially at midday and on brighter days.  Maybe even offer to walk a friends dog if you don’t own one, petting a dog can bring so much joy to both you and the dog.  Not got a chance to go out then bring the outdoors inside – inside your home, choose pale colours that reflect light from outside, and sit near windows whenever you can.

Exercise

If like me you’re a big Aquaman fan and have followed the comics and have also watched the film then you may notice that he has a rather well-formed physique. Many studies show that people who exercise regularly benefit with a positive boost in mood and lower rates of depression. When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins; Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine. For example, the feeling that follows a run or workout is often described as euphoric. If that sounds too strenuous then why not try some gentle yoga, plenty of free videos available online for you to follow.

 

Food & drink

Eating the right foods such as bananas, letils and spinach which will help to boost serotonin levels, a mood-lifting hormone. Dark chocolate can also have the same effect when eaten in moderation so no need to give up the chocolate completely. Blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries are all high in vitamin C, which helps cope with cortisol, a hormone that is released during times of stress, why not pop them all into a smoothie which would be a great way to start your day.

Cutting down on the alcohol is a fantastic way to get more energy as drinking too much can make you feel tired, sluggish and generally a bit under the weather. For every drink you have why not follow it with a glass of water, which will space the drinks out, keep you hydrated and also save you a bit of money.

Hobbies

Is there something you enjoy doing? Keeping our brains active affects our well-being in lots of positive ways. Finishing something like a jigsaw or a model set can give us a sense of accomplishment which helps boost our self-confidence and resilience. Is there something you want to take up but not sure how, the internet is a fantastic resource to help you achieve this, use it to see if there are any local clubs which you can join, maybe you might even make some new friends who share your interest.
